About The Edinburgh Practice

The Edinburgh Practice provides private mental health, neurodevelopmental and therapy services in Edinburgh. Care includes in-person appointments, and some consultations can be offered remotely.

Its services include psychological therapy, psychiatry, autism assessments, ADHD assessments, combined autism and ADHD assessments, an ADHD Medication Clinic, neurodiversity support services, family and couples therapy, intellectual disability assessment, a Memory Clinic and capacity assessments. It also offers sandplay therapy, play therapy, speech and language therapy, art therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, educational cognitive assessments, menopause services, sport performance services and services for organisations.

The practice provides autism assessments for children and young people aged 5 to 17. A neurodevelopmental screening consultation with a clinical psychologist can be used where families are unsure whether a full neurodevelopmental assessment is needed, or which type of assessment may be suitable. This may consider autism, ADHD and mental health difficulties, with recommendations that can include autism assessment, ADHD assessment, combined assessment, psychological therapy or psychiatry consultation.

Child autism assessments are carried out by a multidisciplinary team including clinical psychologists, occupational therapists and a specialist speech and language therapist. The process can include developmental history, information from nursery or school with consent, questionnaires, the ADOS-2 assessment for autism, team review against DSM-V criteria, a written diagnostic report and a post-assessment support meeting. Further assessment may be suggested in some cases, such as nursery or school observation, speech and language assessment, or review by a child psychiatrist.

Post-diagnostic support for children, young people and families can include Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Psychology and Systemic Family Therapy. Support may cover understanding a diagnosis, sensory and communication needs, home and school support strategies, emotional regulation, mental health and family relationships.

The clinical services named by the practice cover mental health, neurodiversity, autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, memory, capacity, menopause, dietetics, occupational therapy, speech and language needs, educational cognitive assessment and sport performance.
