The Maris Practice

The practice treats back pain, neck pain, migraines and headaches, neck related headaches, sciatica, lumbago, sports injuries and arthritic joint pains. Its osteopathic approach includes assessment of the person from a mechanical, functional and structural perspective, with attention to spinal mobility, the nervous and vascular systems, muscles, soft tissue and internal organs.

Osteopathic consultations can include discussion of the current problem and medical history, postural and physical examination, clinical tests, an explanation of the diagnosis and treatment approach, treatment, and tailored stretching and strengthening exercises. The treatments named by the clinic include specific soft tissue massage, gentle movements and precise adjustments.

Western medical acupuncture is also offered. The clinic presents this as an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and says it is mainly used for musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain.

No GP referral is needed before osteopathic treatment. The practice also receives referrals from GPs, health visitors and midwives, as well as self-referrals and referrals from healthcare schemes.

The Maris Practice was founded by Mary-Jane Anderton in 2001. Andrew Oliver provides osteopathy at the Twickenham clinic and uses techniques including classical, cranial and structural osteopathy, medical acupuncture and sports massage.
